Skazka Canyon

A surreal landscape of red rock formations on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul

An otherworldly canyon of red, orange and yellow formations shaped by wind and rain near Issyk-Kul.

Place overview

Skazka Canyon is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most distinctive natural sights, located near the southern shore of Issyk-Kul. Wind and rain have shaped its soft sandstone and clay into ridges, towers and winding passages that resemble castles, animals and imaginary creatures.

The canyon is easy to include in a route along the southern shore. Visitors can follow short walking paths and viewpoints, but the dry surface can be loose and steep in places, so closed shoes, drinking water and sun protection are recommended.

Morning and late afternoon offer softer light and more comfortable temperatures. The colours change with the sun, ranging from deep red and orange to pale yellow, which makes the site especially attractive for photography.

Skazka is a fragile natural landscape. Visitors should stay on established paths, avoid climbing unstable formations and take all waste with them.
